Current Nominations

Akron Volunteer Fire Company

Date of Act: 06/15/2009
Agency: Akron Volunteer Fire Company

Akron EMS responded to routine request for first aid at a soccer field and arrived to find a 14 year old female in cardiac arrest. The entire crew that brought her to us was professional, dedicated and concerned for their patient. They stayed throughout our resuscitation efforts. Additionally, one of their fire chiefs drove the child's mother to the emergency room so she could be with her daughter. The compassion and commitment that each one of these volunteers showed that evening should be recognized. Even though the outcome was not what we would have hoped for they did their best and showed excellent teamwork.

Chris Zemrac

Date of Act: 10/06/2008
Agency: Boston Emergency Squad

I have been on the boston emergency squad for going on 4 years now, and have seen chris in action on numerous occasions. I never really realized what an excellent paramedic and person he was until I personally needed him on October 6, 2008. It all began when my 18month old was playing with my 2 older children and while running around they accidentally knocked over our wooden high chair on top of her head. She was not unconscious or adversely affected in any way at that time. It was about 15 minutes later when she began showing signs of irritability. I decided to try to drive her myself to children's just to be checked out. Along the way i was talking with her and right as i turned to get on the 219, she became unconscious and unresponsive. I immediately called 911 for the squad to respond. They did within minutes, chris was not on duty at the time, but responded when he knew it was my daughter in trouble. The squad tried waking my daughter on several occasions with no success. Chris was in the process of calling mercy flight on standby when she finally woke. I knew chris had plans that evening but he dropped everything to go with us in the ambulance to children's. He treated her so well, and made my confidence in him feel comfortable. It was not just chris doing his job, he took care of her as if she were his own or a relative. He is a very excellent paramedic and person. My daughter did in the long run suffer a concussion with minor damage. For this act i wish to nominate chris for this award. Not just because of this one incident for many others. for this i got to see how valuable he really is. I will forever hold a place in my heart for chris for this.

LT. Michael Lavelle

Date of Act: 2/09/2009
Agency: Town of Hamburg Police Department

While this might not be intended for Police Personnel, Lt Lavelle's selfless actions on Sunday Feb. 9, 2009 at appx 10:10pm are worthy of noting. While on his way home, after picking up the next shift supervisor, Lt Lavelle was waiting at the traffic signal at the busy intersection of Camp Rd and Southwestern Blvd.

Lt Lavelle, along with Lt Dienes, witnessed a horrific crash where a full size pickup truck struck a medium sized passenger vehicle. The passenger vehicle burst into flames with-in seconds, with the driver still inside.

Lt Lavelle, without regard to his safety, ran towards the injured party, attempting a rescue. Flames beat him back as he removed his leather patrol jacket, creating a barrier between the victim and the fire. The victim was freed from the vehicle, but not before suffering serious burns.
Rural Metro Paramedics transported the injured party to ECMC.
Scranton Fire Department personnel tended to the other details of the accident.

Without Lt Lavelle's selfless act, the victim from the accident would've certainly fared far worse.

Scott Hultquist

Date of Act: 3/16/2009
Agency: Eden Emergency Squad

Scott took over leadership of the Eden Emergency Squad in 2006 as director. At the time the squad had low morale, Scott infused a sense of can do attitude in the unit that day time calls where covered and with a call volume of aprox. 550 calls per year was able to provide services with out having to have Rural Metro come in and handle calls.

Scott has upgraded our service and pushed ahead with Pt billing to keep our unit viable. Scott also has made it his agenda to see that we stay ahead of the game and be proactive in what we do as a unit to provide the best care to our community.

Sharon Hoy

Date of Act: 3/18/2009
Agency: Wyoming County Community Hospital/Monroe Ambulance

Sharon is a sweet individual who is always there to help. Sharon is a paramedic with Monroe ambulance. In addition to this Sharon spends time with us, the ED staff, always giving a friendly hello or asking "do you need a hand"? When Sharon is not busy with her work she is at home sewing gifts to hand out to the sick children that visit our emergency department at WCCHS. Each month she brings in home sewn teddy bears, dolls or coloring bags filled with books that would make the sickest child smile! We recommend her for this award for her dedication to her job, our facility and to her home sewn talents!!

EMT-B Stiner

Date of Act: 8/13/2009
Agency: Rural Metro

I was at Bison's game with my work. I noticed a man in a wheel chair that was getting severely sunburned. He had some kind of aid with him that seemed totally oblivious to the man's condition. A Rural Metro EMT on duty at the game, ( Stiner on his name tape), also noticed the man's condition. He approached the guy (aid), and pointed out the severity of the guys sunburn. Stiner then contacted one of the ushers, and made arrangements for the guy to be moved into the shade, so he could still watch the game. As a former EMT, I was very happy to see him go above and beyond to help this guy. Rural Metro should be very proud of this man.

Jennifer Blackchief

Date of Act: 8/27/2009
Agency: Union Fire Company

We at Union Fire Company were experiencing numerous obstacles in implementing our CME Program and our state inspection for our ambulance.  Jennifer took it upon herself to outline what needed to be done to get the program up and running.  Not an easy task.  She spent numerous hours as liaison between our company and the State Health Department.  After many hours of her own time and implementing a program, she assigned task to other personal to get everything done properly for our State Inspection and CME Program.  Jennifer went over and above in a professional manner with her staff.  Jennifer does this in an unselfish and caring manner. I think she should be recognized for her devotion to our EMS providers.  On August 28th we passed our inspection and our CME program is up and running.
